Please don't look at me like I have lobsters crawling out of my ears when I mention that I'm thinking of decreasing the size of my wheels to 16" from 17" and then tell me that I ***have*** to get spacers to do so. I may be a female, but I am not stupid. I am not changing the tire width--just the aspect ratio.
Furthermore, don't lie to me and tell me you are an off-road enthusiast after asking me why I would want to decrease my wheel size on a lifted FJ that you have just looked at and told me I would need spacers to do what I want. You were more transparent than cling-wrap.
Sincerely,
The WOMANagement.

Tell the tire shop what you want. They don't know the vehicle better than you.
(although there maybe some 16 inch wheel combination that will have a problem with the brake calipers many 16 inch wheel choices will not)

i have been lucky with discount and would recommend the one at 99th ave and McDowell there is an actual off road guy there and he was very accommodating. i went on line and found 255/80r17 online for like 190 shipped which is 15 cheaper then even discount tire direct so he price matched them. well they came in and they did not fit with the wheels i had due to the off set on the newer 4runners tires being different so then i was walking back into the office and saw some 16x8 for sale for like 50 bucks each so i bought them and then he ordered 255/85r16 and price matched those for even less when all said and done it was only like 150 more for the wheels plus i got a 60 dollar mail in rebate. the web site i found my tires on was tirecrawler.com

@ glideraz and cheeze-- you're both correct, it was Discount.
@ fino -- isn't it the tire company's job to know about tires and wheels and what combinations will work together and what won't? Or have we just all lowered our expectations that much? I don't expect them to know the vehicle better than me, but I think it's reasonable to expect them to know that changing wheel size and compensating by raising the aspect ratio and not changing tire width is not going to require spacers. Maybe it's just because I'm a highly skilled spacial thinker....but that just seems too obvious.
@ Craig-- I have figured out that I have to find ways to justify the costs for things in order for hubbster to sign on to changes. I was able to get a new lift because the suspension was shot. The only way I will get new bumpers (and everything else you mentioned) is if I damage mine for some reason--and it can't be off-road or else he will NEVER let me out again!!!
@ RunnerRick--99th & McDowell is a little far for me but when I'm ready to do something, I will check it out. I think, however, I have settled on getting Mickey Thompson ATZs and I don't think they carry those. I believe they do carry Kurt's favorites by Hankook though.

i've found with discount tire it's hit and miss our acura burns through a set of tire in 15,000 miles discount are the only won who offers a 30,000 miles performance tire so we always go there sometimes they give us sh## for blowing through them as fast as we do but in the end you can't beat the warranty good luck

I think it is the woman factor. They don't think that women know anything about their vehicles. My wife just went into a shop to get her tire repaired. The nail is right in the middle and they told her that they couldn't patch it (didn't get the road damage protection since the car is newer and has the tires from the dealer). They wanted her to buy a new tire. The tires have 75% wear left on them that is definitely not going to happen.
Whenever I hear stories about idiots I always think of the movie Idiocracy.

no luck with with Big O Tires for me, well the one on 107th and indian school. They wanted to charge me twice as much for an allignment because of my 3" lift and "bigger tires". I asked them if they charge more for dodge trucks because they have 285/70/17's also. They said no, but that its is more difficult and takes more time to allign a toyota that has been lifted 3". Needless to say I went somewhere else.

yeah that's like the "cant balance mud tires Bullshit!!!" I've never had a mud tire that couldnt be balanced. I've owned at least ten sets!!! They just dont want to do it because if they dont it means that your tires wear out faster. So you buy some more from them. It takes more work to get it right and it doesnt pay for them to do it right. Make them do it it's their FN JOB!!!!! If they dont like it find a better shop!!
